This śloka states the sambandha — the connection between the ritual section (karma-kāṇḍa) that precedes brahmavidyā and the knowledge-section that follows. The vaidika rites enjoined in the Yajurveda run from the darśa-pūrṇamāsa sacrifice to the pitṛmedha, the final funerary rite; so "from darśa to pitṛmedha" means the whole body of enjoined karma. Performed not in one life but across many births, and without craving for their fruits, these rites ripen the mind — purity and one-pointedness. From that ripening, in the final birth, vividiṣā arises: the intense longing to know the Self. The birth in which this longing is born is itself the last birth. The longing must be firm enough to say, "I want nothing besides the experience of the Self; I cannot rest without ātma-jñāna." Until such intensity comes, the seeker keeps performing the duties of his varṇa and āśrama. Karma does not yield liberation directly; it prepares the maturity of mind that knowledge requires.

This second śloka does the quiet structural work the first one promised: it states the sambandha, the join between the karma-kāṇḍa and the jñāna-kāṇḍa. The question it answers is the one every reader of the Veda eventually asks — if ritual action cannot itself liberate, why is the whole first half of the Veda given to it? Vidyāraṇya's answer is the orthodox Advaita one: karma is not a direct means to mokṣa, but it is the means to the fitness for knowledge. It purifies and steadies the mind until the mind is capable of the inquiry that does liberate.
The reach of the phrase "from darśa to pitṛmedha" is deliberate. The darśa is the new-moon sacrifice near the start of a ritual life; the pitṛmedha is the last rite, performed at death. Naming the first and the last is a way of naming everything between — the entire span of enjoined action across a whole life, and, the verse adds, across many lives. The ripening is not the work of a single birth. One performs the duties of one's varṇa and āśrama, life after life, without grasping at their fruits, and the residue is not heaven but a clearer instrument.
And then the precise claim: vividiṣā, the longing to know, arises in the final birth — indeed, the birth in which it truly arises is the final one. This is not a longing among other longings. The commentary sets the bar high: it must be the intensity of "I want nothing but the experience of the Self; I cannot go on without ātma-jñāna." A mild interest in Vedānta is not yet vividiṣā. Until that fire is lit, the path is continued dharma; once it is lit, the karma-kāṇḍa has done its work, and the inquiry of the Brahmavallī can begin. That is exactly the doorway the next ślokas walk through.
- సంబంధః — the verse names the join between ritual and knowledge: why the karma-kāṇḍa precedes brahmavidyā at all.
- దర్శ → పితృమేధ = సర్వకర్మ — naming the first rite and the last is a way of naming the whole body of enjoined action across a life.
- బహుజన్మసు — the ripening is not one life's work; purity of mind accrues across many births of niṣkāma karma.
- కర్మ → చిత్తశుద్ధి → వివిదిష — karma never liberates directly; it earns adhikāra for knowledge by purifying the mind (Śaṅkara's settled position).
- అంతిమజన్మ-లక్షణం — the birth in which intense vividiṣā arises is the last birth; mild interest is not yet vividiṣā.
Audio — anuṣṭubh metre, two pādas. Recite darśādi-pitṛmedhāntaiḥ steadily as the long sweep of action, and let jāyate 'ntima-janmani fall with weight — the arrival of the longing that ends the round of births.
