The second śloka showed how the longing to know (vividiṣā) is born of karma. The third now shows the next rung: longing alone is not enough — one-pointedness (ekāgratā) is required. If the longing is present but the mind stays restless and scattered by the sheer multiplicity of its activity, distraction only grows. So yoga — contemplation — is needed for concentration. The Taittirīya's Śīkṣāvallī teaches its upāsanās for exactly this purpose: the first anuvāka gives the śānti-mantra to remove the obstacles that breed distaste for vidyā even in the dispassionate; the second enjoins care in pronunciation (śīkṣā); the third gives the saṃhitā-upāsanā for fruits here and hereafter. Once one-pointedness is attained — once the restraint of the mind's movements is well practiced — the Śruti lays out the sūtra, the thread, of brahma-jñāna; for once fitness (adhikāra) is won, the means to the supreme human end is the knowledge of Brahman alone. Here Vidyāraṇya gestures at the whole Śīkṣāvallī by indication, and turns toward the Brahmavallī.

English
If verse 2 was about the birth of the longing, verse 3 is about its discipline. Vidyāraṇya is careful here, because a real danger lurks at exactly this point on the path: a seeker can have a genuine longing for the Self and still get nowhere, because the mind is too scattered to hold the inquiry. Desire without concentration, the commentary says bluntly, does not steady the mind — the sheer multiplicity of mental activity only deepens the groove of distraction. So between longing and knowledge stands yoga: the practice of one-pointedness.
This is where the Śīkṣāvallī earns its place. Vidyāraṇya reads its contemplations not as quaint ritual leftovers but as concentration-training. The śānti-mantra clears the obstacles; the lesson on pronunciation enforces the kind of exact attention that steadies a restless mind; and the saṃhitā-upāsanā — the meditation on "junctions," taking each joining of sounds and contemplating it across five planes (world, lights, knowledge, progeny, the body) — is a graded exercise in holding the mind on one structured object. The famous fivefold table (earth-heaven-space-air; fire-sun-water-lightning; teacher-pupil-knowledge-instruction; mother-father-child-procreation; lower jaw-upper jaw-speech-tongue) is, in this reading, a scaffolding for attention.
And then the hinge: ekāgre sādhite — "when one-pointedness has been attained." Only then does the Śruti "thread" the vidyā — sūtrayati, lay it out as a sūtra. The sequencing is the whole Advaita pedagogy in one line: karma earns the longing, upāsana earns the steadiness, and only the steadied, fit mind is handed the knowledge that actually liberates. With this, Vidyāraṇya has discharged his promise from verse 1 to touch the Śīkṣāvallī by indication only — and the road now opens onto the Brahmavallī, where the thread begins.
- వివిదిష → ఏకాగ్రత — longing is not enough; a scattered mind cannot hold the inquiry, so yoga (one-pointedness) is the next rung.
- ఉపాసన = ఏకాగ్రతా-సాధనం — the Śīkṣāvallī's contemplations are read as concentration-training, not mere ritual.
- సంహితోపాసన — meditation on "junctions" across five planes (adhiloka, adhijyautiṣa, adhividya, adhiprajā, adhyātma) — a scaffolding for attention.
- ఏకాగ్రే సాధితే — only when one-pointedness is won does the Śruti "thread" the vidyā as a sūtra.
- కర్మ → యోగం → జ్ఞానం — the full Advaita sequence: karma earns the longing, upāsana earns steadiness, knowledge alone liberates.
Audio — anuṣṭubh metre. Carry tato yogaṃ samabhyasya as the steady work of practice, pause at ekāgre sādhite, and let vidyāṃ sūtrayati śrutiḥ open forward — the thread of knowledge about to begin.
