Having gestured at the whole Śīkṣāvallī by indication, Vidyāraṇya now reaches the start of the Brahmavallī. Before stating the vidyā-sūtra (brahmavid āpnoti param), the Śruti places a śānti-mantra (saha nāv avatu — and with śaṃ no mitraḥ, two of them). Its purpose: obstacles to gaining vidyā inevitably arise — not only from the seeker's own mind but from worldly people, from circumstances, even from the devas. Chief among the inner ones are the faults seated in the mind, dveṣa (hatred) and its kin. To quell them, the śāstra directs repeated prayer to Parameśvara — for He alone wills our supreme good, while everyone else finds advantage in the jīva remaining bound. So, without hoping for cooperation from any other person, thing, or circumstance, one prays to Īśvara alone and, with full patience, stays intent on inquiry; only then is the creature's welfare possible. This peace-chant is to be recited before and after each day's study.

English

There is a quiet realism in this verse that is easy to pass over. Vidyāraṇya has brought the seeker to the threshold of the Brahmavallī — the longing is born, the mind is steadied, the thread of knowledge is about to be laid. And the very first thing the Śruti does at that threshold is not to teach, but to pray. Before the vidyā-sūtra comes a śānti-mantra, to be chanted; and the reason given is sober: obstacles to knowledge are real and they are many.

What makes the verse striking is where it locates the obstacles. They are not only "out there" in difficult circumstances; the chief ones are manasi sthitāḥ — seated in the mind itself — and named first among them is dveṣa, hatred or aversion. A mind carrying resentment cannot rest in inquiry. But the commentary widens the field unsparingly: obstruction can come from worldly people, from situations, even from the devas, because — in a remarkably stark phrase — everyone except Īśvara finds some advantage in the jīva staying bound. The seeker's bondage is, in a sense, useful to the whole apparatus of the world; only the Lord wills the soul's actual freedom.

The conclusion drawn is therefore not "remove the obstacles by your own effort" but "stop expecting cooperation from anyone or anything else, and pray to Īśvara alone, with patience, while staying intent on the inquiry." This is why the Brahmavallī opens with two śānti-mantras together — saha nāv avatu and śaṃ no mitraḥ — recited before and after each day's study. The peace-chant is not decoration; it is the seeker acknowledging, at the door of knowledge, that the inner enemies are subtler than the outer ones, and that the only reliable ally is the one who wants nothing from his bondage. With the obstacles addressed, the next śloka can finally state the sūtra itself.

- సూత్రాత్ పూర్వం — before teaching the vidyā-sūtra, the Brahmavallī prays; the śānti-mantra precedes the knowledge.

- మనసి స్థితాః విఘ్నాః — the chief obstacles are inner — dveṣa (hatred) and its kin seated in the mind, not merely outer circumstance.

- సర్వతో విఘ్నాః — obstruction can come from people, circumstances, even devas, because all but Īśvara find advantage in the jīva staying bound.

- ఈశ్వర-శరణ్యం — the lone reliable refuge is Parameśvara, who alone wills the soul's freedom; pray to Him, not to others' cooperation.

- ద్వౌ శాంతిమంత్రౌ — the Brahmavallī opens with two together (saha nāv avatu, śaṃ no mitraḥ), chanted before and after study.

Audio — anuṣṭubh metre. Let sūtrāt pūrvaṃ śānti-mantraḥ set the scene calmly, and bring śāmyanti manasi sthitāḥ down softly — the inner obstacles subsiding under the chant.
