English

Aparokṣānubhūti — the direct, immediate cognition of the Ātman — is here expounded for the attainment of liberation. The pure in heart alone should meditate upon it, with effort, again and again.

‘Aparokṣa’ means not-mediate: this is not knowledge of an object reached through perception or inference, but the Self that is always present in every act of cognition. Everybody already has some knowledge of this Self — to deny it is to deny one's own existence — yet its real nature stays veiled until the mind is purified through upāsanā and tapas. The culmination is not ‘I am the witness’ (which still keeps the duality of ‘I’ and ‘witness’) but the merging of knower and known in the self-effulgent, non-dual Ātman. That non-dual realization is the consummation of Aparokṣānubhūti.
