The four preliminary qualifications — the means to knowledge, such as dispassion and the rest — are acquired by men through the performance of duties pertaining to their social order and stage in life, through austerity, and by propitiating Hari (the Lord).

శాంకర-భాష్య-సారము · Śaṅkara's point

The fourfold means (sādhana-catuṣṭaya) is the gateway: vairāgya (dispassion), viveka (discrimination), the six treasures beginning with śama (śamādi-ṣaṭka-sampatti), and mumukṣutva (yearning for liberation). Karma done as svadharma, austerity, and devotion to the Lord purify the mind; only the purified mind becomes fit to undertake the enquiry into Brahman. Qualification precedes vicāra.
