Indifference to every enjoyment from Brahmā's realm down to this world — like one's indifference to a crow's excreta — is alone pure dispassion.

English

The indifference with which one treats the excreta of a crow — such an indifference to all objects of enjoyment from the realm of Brahmā down to this world, in view of their perishable nature — is verily called pure dispassion.

శాంకర-భాష్య-సారము · Śaṅkara's point

Only pure (nirmala) vairāgya counts. One may be indifferent to this world merely because one hopes for better enjoyment in the next — that indifference is tainted with desire and bars the door to Knowledge. But the indifference born of deliberation on the evanescent nature of every enjoyment, here and hereafter, is alone pure and productive of the highest good. The crow's-excreta simile fixes the degree: total, undisguised disgust, not calculated restraint.
