The sage Vājaśravasa performed the Viśvajit sacrifice, whose rule requires giving away one's entire wealth as the priestly gift. He undertook it desiring the heavenly fruits such a rite promises. He had a son named Naciketas — the seeker who becomes the heart of this Upaniṣad, and who will soon question the worth of a gift made without faith.

English
Desiring the fruits of sacrifice, Vājaśravasa gave away all that he owned. He had a son named Naciketas. The verse opens the narrative: a sage performs the Viśvajit sacrifice, whose rule requires giving away one's entire wealth as the priestly gift. He undertakes it out of desire for heavenly reward. He has a son, Naciketas — the seeker who will become the heart of this Upaniṣad, and who will soon question the worth of a gift given without faith.
పంచరత్నాలు · पञ्चरत्नानि
उशन् = ఫలాపేక్ష — the first word flags the sacrifice is done desiring reward, setting up the contrast with niṣkāma to come.
विश्वजित् vrata — the rite demands sarva-vedasam, total wealth, as dakṣiṇā; hence he gives everything.
वाजश्रवसः — the patronymic (“son of one famed through food-giving”) quietly foreshadows the theme of dāna.
नचिकेता नाम — naming the son immediately centres the narrative on him, not the father.
आस (बभूव) — the simple past “there was” frames this as itihāsa, a teaching-story carrying doctrinal weight.
