As the gift-cows were being led away one by one, faith (śraddhā) entered Naciketas, who was still only a boy. Śraddhā here is not mere belief but āstikya-buddhi — a deep conviction that dharma and the fruits of sacrifice are real, joined to an earnest concern that the rite be performed rightly. The moment this faith took hold, he began to reflect: is this gift my father is making a true gift at all? The previous verse showed a sacrifice done out of desire for reward; here, in a mere boy, awakens the faith that can perceive the flaw in such a gift. This śraddhā is the root of Naciketas's journey to Yama's realm and of the brahmavidyā he will receive.
English
While the gift-cows were being led away, faith entered Naciketas, though he was still a boy; and he began to reflect. Śaṅkara stresses that śraddhā here means āstikya-buddhi — the conviction that dharma is real — and that it arose naturally in a son who wished his father well. Though young, the boy is moved not by rebellion but by earnest concern for the rite's integrity, and this reflection sets up the searching thought voiced in the next verse.
श्रद्धा = आस्तिक्यबुद्धि — Śaṅkara's precise gloss: not vague belief but firm conviction that dharma and its fruits are real — the seed-virtue of the whole Upaniṣad.
कुमारं सन्तम् — the emphasis that he was still a boy underscores that spiritual insight is not a function of age.
दक्षिणासु नीयमानासु — the cows being led away is the visible trigger; Naciketas sees the actual gift, not the idea of it.
पितुः हितकामना — his reflection springs from wishing his father well, not from defiance — the right inner posture toward an elder.
अमन्यत — “he thought”: the verse ends on the threshold of inquiry, the pivot from observing the sacrifice to questioning it.
