Naciketas now puts his thought into words. Since his father is giving away everything he owns, the boy — counting himself part of that ‘all’ — goes to him and asks, ‘Father, to whom will you give me?’ The father ignores the first asking; so the boy asks a second time, a third time, pressing the same question. Vexed by the child's persistence, the father snaps in anger: ‘To Death I give you!’ — words spoken in irritation. Yet this is the hinge of the whole story. Naciketas's faith, and his concern that the rite not be barren, has crystallized into this bold question; and that question is what will carry him to the realm of Death, and from there to the knowledge of Brahman.

English
Naciketas, reasoning that a son too is part of the ‘all’ his father is giving away, approaches him and asks, ‘Father, to whom will you give me?’ Asked once and ignored, he repeats it a second and a third time. The father, provoked by the persistence, says in anger, ‘To Death I give you.’ Śaṅkara notes the words were spoken from irritation, not real intent — yet Naciketas, valuing his father's truthfulness, will resolve to make even this angry utterance come true. The boy's goodwill and faith turn a father's hasty words into the doorway of the teaching.
कस्मै मां दास्यसि — the boy includes himself in the ‘all’ being given; a child's literal, faith-driven logic about the completeness of dāna becomes the engine of the whole Upaniṣad.
द्वितीयं तृतीयम् — the threefold asking shows earnest persistence, not mere childishness; tradition reads gravity behind the question.
रोषवशात् — Śaṅkara is careful: the father speaks from anger, not deliberate will. This guards against reading him as cruel.
मृत्यवे त्वा ददामि — the pivot of the narrative: an angry phrase that Naciketas will choose to honour as a vow, sending him to Yama.
पितुः सत्यरक्षणम् — the seed of the next verse: the son's resolve to keep his father's word true, even at cost to himself — a model of satya and śraddhā.
