Setting out for Yama's realm to make his father's word come true, Naciketas steadies himself on the way with these reflections. ‘Among the many sons and disciples who have gone before, I rank as the first — the best; or at worst as the middling — never as the lowest.’ It is the quiet self-assurance of one who knows that in obeying his father and upholding truth he stands with the finest. Then a question: ‘What task does Death have that requires me? What does my father mean to accomplish today by handing me over to Yama?’ The lines reveal a boy unafraid of death, firm in his father's word — going to face Death itself with no fear, only commitment to truth and dharma.

English
On his way to Death, Naciketas reassures himself: among the many who have gone before, he ranks among the best, or at least the middling — never the worst — in obedience and truthfulness. Then he wonders what purpose Yama could have with him, what his father means to accomplish by this. Śaṅkara emphasizes the boy's resolve that his father's word be kept true, and his composure: he goes to Death not in terror but with the steady confidence of one who values dharma above his own life.
Naciketas measures himself among predecessors: best, or at least middling, never lowest. Quiet self-assurance rooted in fidelity to truth, not arrogance.
Fearlessness before death — a boy walking willingly toward Yama, reflecting calmly rather than panicking; the verse models abhaya born of dharma.
पितुः सत्यरक्षणम् — the driving resolve: his father's hasty word must be made true. Satya outweighs self-preservation.
किंस्विद् यमस्य कर्तव्यम् — the searching question — what could Death want of me? — turns dread into inquiry, the temper that will later win him brahmavidyā.
Inner steadiness — the whole verse is interior monologue: the hero's greatness shown not in deeds yet but in the calm quality of his thought facing death.
