The previous verse warned that to slight a guest is dangerous; this verse spells out how grave that danger is. In whose house a brahmin guest stays without being fed — that man, ‘of little understanding,’ loses everything to the guest. What is destroyed? His hopes and expectations; the fruit of keeping good company; the reward of kind and truthful speech; the merit of his sacrifices (iṣṭa) and public works such as wells and tanks (pūrta); his sons and his cattle — in short, all his this-worldly and other-worldly wealth. Neglecting a guest is no small lapse: it wipes out the whole store of one's merit. Since even Yama, the god of dharma, is bound by this law, letting Naciketas fast three nights is a real failing — and it is precisely to repair it that Yama will offer three boons.
English
‘Hope’ (āśā) is longing for what is not yet had; ‘expectation’ (pratīkṣā) is awaiting what is near at hand — both are destroyed. So too the fruit of good company (saṅgata), of kind and true speech (sūnṛtā), the merit of sacrifices (iṣṭa) and public benefactions like wells and tanks (pūrta), and one's sons and cattle. All of this the unhonoured brahmin guest carries off from the house of the man ‘of little understanding’ who lets him stay unfed. Śaṅkara enumerates each loss precisely, driving home that neglected hospitality forfeits the totality of a person's worldly and spiritual goods.
A catalogue of total loss — hope, expectation, good company, true speech, sacrifices, public works, sons, cattle: a sweep across every worldly and spiritual good. Nothing is spared.
इष्टापूर्त — the classic pair: iṣṭa (Vedic sacrificial merit) and pūrta (public-welfare works — wells, tanks, gardens). Together they name the whole field of meritorious action.
अल्पमेधसः — the neglecter is called ‘of little understanding’: failing hospitality is framed not as mere rudeness but as foolishness, blindness to what is at stake.
अनश्नन् वसति — the precise offense is a guest dwelling without eating; the duty is active feeding and welcome, not passive tolerance.
Why three boons — Yama's three-night neglect of Naciketas incurs exactly this kind of debt, which the three boons discharge.
