The Upaniṣad opens with the praṇava, Om, and treats it as the whole of what follows. Om is one syllable (akṣara) — imperishable, unwasting. All this universe is its exposition. Whatever is past, present, or future, and even what stands beyond the three times, is nothing but Om. The point is not that Om is merely a sacred sound to be chanted; rather, the name Om and the named (Brahman, the Self) are one, and so to grasp Om fully is to grasp the whole of reality across all time and beyond time. The entire text now unfolds this single equation — that the syllable, the world, and the Self are one.

English

Om, this syllable, is all this. The Upaniṣad begins by declaring the praṇava and identifying it with the whole of reality. Om is an akṣara — the imperishable. Everything is its exposition: past, present, and future are all simply Om, and whatever lies beyond the three times is Om as well. Śaṅkara explains that a thing is dealt with through its name, and since the name (Om) and the named (Brahman) are non-different, all is Om. Gauḍapāda's Āgama-prakaraṇa adds the structural key: Om is to be known measure by measure (pāda), its measures being a, u, m and the silent fourth — the analysis the rest of the text carries out. To know Om thus, pāda by pāda, is to need nothing further to contemplate.

- अक्षरम् = the imperishable — Om is named akṣara: both 'syllable' and 'that which does not perish.' The pun is the doctrine — the sound is the deathless.

- Name and named are one — Śaṅkara's key move: Om (nāma) and Brahman (nāmin) are non-different, so meditation on the sound is meditation on the Self.

- All three times, and beyond — past, present, and future are Om; even the timeless (avyākṛta, Turīya) is Om. Nothing falls outside the syllable.

- upavyākhyāna — the whole world is the 'explanation' of Om: reality is the unfolding of the one syllable, and the text is the unfolding of that unfolding.

- Pāda by pāda — Gauḍapāda signals the method: Om will be taken apart into a-u-m + amātra, mapped to the four states. Mantra 1 is the thesis; the rest is the proof.

Audio — this first mantra is prose, not metrical; recite it as measured declaration, not chant. Let om ity etad akṣaram idaṃ sarvam land as a thesis stated, and tad apy oṅkāra eva close with quiet finality.
